Collection: NWA 12241 Shergottite
Northwest Africa 12241 is a Martian meteorite of the shergottite class, discovered in Algeria and purchased in August 2018 and classified as a low-shock, olivine gabbroic shergottite with an orthocumulate texture. The total known weight is 1150 grams.
NWA 12241 consists of multiple pale green fragments, some with patches of black fusion crust. The interior displays coarse mafic silicate grains and interstitial plagioclase. While fresh and relatively unshocked, it shows microcracks in silicates but lacks the typical maskelynite found in many Martian meteorites. Accessory minerals include merrillite, apatite, ilmenite, and chromite, along with traces of pyrrhotite and pentlandite.
This exceptional specimen offers a direct link to the geology of Mars and makes a highly collectible and scientifically valuable addition to any meteorite collection.
